In this picture, the pond is the small

The long one is the creek the pond runs
into.

Pond Building and Pictures!
article and photos by;
Thomas Mitchell

Another work project by Bob Mitchell Excavating Ltd

I "Tom" built that Pond.
I used a Deer 200 excavator with a thumb attachment that was use for holding ROCKS called Rip-Rap.

A 350 JD cat with a 6 way blade was use to go between the clay face and the rip-rap for leveling. A diesel flat drum packer for compaction.

The hole for the Pond was dug out of blue clay. Looks like the clay they make pottery out of. Real sticky, hard to get out of the bucket.

The rip-pap was placed 3 meters from the clay face, filter cloth was laied out then pit-run, (gravel) a meter deep would be leveled with the cat and packed.
Then after the first level or base, a plastic netting was used to cover the entire 3 meters. 1 meter of drain rock, rapped in filter cloth, and 2 meters of pit-run.

All the rocks use in the construction of the main body of the pond had to be one and a half meter in length and one meterhigh. The top two rows are smaller to slope into the bank.

The right side of the pond is also rip-rap with smaller stuff on top. A gentle slope so if anything fell in, it can get out.

This first picture is the inlet to the pond. Or the outlet for ground and rain water from the subdivision.

This next picture is looking back into the subdivision.
But looking at the front of the pond building area.

This is the back of the pond.
The creek is down the hill.

When the pond reaches a certain level the water then runs out the back of the pond, though a 8in. pipe and down the hill to another pond at the bottom.

As you can see in the picture, the water disappears into the ground. It is going into baskets of 3in. washed rocks.
That slows it down.
The pond at the bottom is made of wire baskets as well.
This pond was placed above the creeks high-water line to prevent contamination.

Here's Were It All Happened!
The pond is at the other end on the left by the house. That is the first faze of the subdivision that was done pryer to this faze.

Now That's A View From Your Window! i'm talking about that nice little car, heek, there's mountains all round you in Fernie B.C.

Not a bad view from the back window either!

The excavator in the background is going to make that area look nice and green.
So the deer and other wild animals have away to cross the creek. Plus there is a power line overhead.
